Widely revered pianist Melvyn Tan performs a selection of early and contemporary works to create a unique programme which Melvyn describes as a reflection on Spitalfields itself, and the combination of old and new elements existing harmoniously within the area. Carefully selected for their subtle connections, Melvyn has chosen works linked together by the composers’ connections and inspirations, with the later works taking influence from their predecessors, so as to create a cohesive yet diverse repertoire.

Common threads such as ‘sound painting’ and traditional Eastern tonalities can be heard weaving throughout elements of the programme, which will feature recently composedselections from Shivereens, a collection of piano miniatures, written over the past fifteen years by composer Julian Grant, whilst living in Hong Kong, Japan and China. Named after the colloquial Scottish term for a shard, or fragment, Grant describes his Shivereen miniatures as comprising 'musical diary entries, a blog maybe, random impressions, memories and moods.'
